🇺🇸 When I was living in Europe in the 80’s and 90’s, French music wasn’t globally recognized or popular amongst my friends. The music scene was essentially commercial in style, “les variétés,” so if you were more into alternative music, there was not much to choose from. However in 1986, France passed a law that required private radios to play at least 40% of French music with a minimum of 50% new talents or songs, helped change things. This allowed French hip hop to blossom to the point that it is now, the world’s second largest in the scene after the US.
And now social media also empowers independent artists to produce on their own with greater ease. So to our delight, there’s now much stronger indie music scene and selection with extremely talented people who mostly sing in French. My current favorite group is Thérapie Taxi. Unfortunately they are splitting up this year, but they left us many gems!
Here is one of my favorite song from their album “Cadavre Exquis”: “Candide Crush.” I personally also recommend “Vulgaire animal” “Naive” or “Brutal Summer.” The lead singer Adélaïde (who likes to be called Adé) has a beautiful husky voice, and I love their lyrics too. 今回は、Thérapie Taxiというポップ・ロック・エレクトロ系のバンドのアルバム「Cadavre Exquis」をご紹介させていただきます。ちなみに同アルバムの中で、個人的に楽曲「Vulgaire animal」や「Naïve」、 「Brutal Summer」が特に推しです！
私がヨーロッパに住んでいた80年～90年代は、フランスの音楽シーンはちょっとダサいイメージがありましたが、最近はカッコいいオルタナティブなミュージシャンが本当に多くて、嬉しい限りです。86年にフランスで、ラジオなどで流す楽曲の4割をフランスのアーティストにする法律が施行されたため、フランスの音楽シーンがより活発になったのではないかと感じています。実際、そのおかげでフランスのヒップホップシーンが盛り上がって、現在は世界で2位にランクインしています。また、SNSなどの普及で、インディーズのアーティストが自己プロデュースしやすくなったことも、影響を及ぼしたのではないでしょうか。
ただ残念ながら、Thérapie Taxi は今年で解散してしまいます…。ですが、たくさん傑作を残してくれているので、興味あったらスポティファイやアイチューンズなどで聴いてみてください！
